Leander was b. with two "clubbed feet " and crawled on his hands and
knees until old enough to make his own shoes.
They were oval to fit the foot, and made of dog-skin leather that he
tanned himself, and had attached 1/8th inch
thick metal soles cradled and riveted to the bottoms. Henceforth,
Leander was extremely happy, dancing every
time he heard music, even if he was on a sidewalk in town. Crowds
used to gather when Leander started dancing
because sparks would fly from Leander's metal shoes as he danced on
the pavement. (History of Oconee, S.C.)
